About Hearing and Vision Testing

JC Michaelson provides comprehensive audiometric and vision testing for workplaces, organizations, and individuals.

Understanding the occupational noise exposure and visual demands your employees face is essential to a healthy organization.

All of our technicians are certified by the Council of Accreditation for Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC) and are experienced with OSHA guidelines, Standard Threshold Shift (STS) guidelines, and requirements for documentation.

What is Occupational Noise Exposure?

Noise, or unwanted sound, is one of the most pervasive occupational health problems. It is the by-product of many industrial processes.

Exposure to high levels of noise causes hearing loss and may cause other harmful health effects as well. Noise-induced hearing loss can be temporary or permanent (OSHA, Hearing Conservation Program).

It’s important – and sometimes required to meet OSHA standards – to monitor your workplace’s occupational noise exposure, and to understand what auditory risks your employees are facing and how you can mitigate them.

What is Standard Threshold Shift?

A Standard Threshold Shift (STS) is defined in occupational noise exposure standard as a change in hearing threshold relative to a baseline audiogram. These shifts can be temporary or permanent.

Our team is experienced in STS management. Recognizing that not all STS are work-related, we get thorough histories on employees, submit information to an experienced Occupational health Physician for review, and assist employers in moving forward.

We work to ensure proper baseline audiometric testing and baseline revisions when an STS is determined. Regular testing both saves the employer time and money and decreases frustration for employees.

What is Occupational Vision Testing?

OSHA Standards provide the minimum requirements to assist employers to provide a safe work environment. We support those minimum requirements to offer employees and employers a more complete picture of the visual demands they face in the workplace.

Baseline and annual vision testing can provide early insights into issues that could impair vision, such as aging or diabetes. Visual acuity data can also be valuable information following an eye injury for both an employer and employee.

Catching issues early can not only improve safety in the work environment but also prevent long-term damage to an employee’s vision.
